More flights for St Helena

A chartered Bombardier Challenger business jet arrived at St Helena’s new airport last Monday to become the sixth fixed-wing aircraft to land there since the facility opened in April.

Construction work on the airport began in 2012 and was finished earlier this year, with scheduled air services from Johannesburg due to start on 21 May.

On 26 April, the St Helena government announced an indefinite delay because of concerns over wind shear, which are in the process of being dealt with (BTN 2 May).

Last Monday’s flight, and a return leg on the following day, was to renew and relieve airport staff, with eight incoming and eight outgoing passengers, in addition to flight crew.

The aircraft arrived at St Helena from Walvis Bay shortly before noon local time, with the St Helena government announcing that the crew reported “an uneventful landing operation with nothing abnormal experienced”.
