Boeing in Iran Air deal

A tentative agreement to sell aircraft to Iran was announced by Boeing on Tuesday after Iran Air said it was considering introducing the B737 and B777 to its fleet subject to government and US approval.

If the deal goes ahead, it will be one of Iran’s biggest with an American company since international sanctions on Tehran were eased.

In a statement, the aircraft manufacturer said: “Boeing confirms the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Iran Air, expressing the airline’s intent to purchase Boeing commercial passenger airplanes.”

An Iran Air spokesman said the order would include Boeing’s newest long-haul B777-9, which is not due to enter service for another four years, as well as its predecessor, the B777-300ER.

Iran’s transport minister, Abbas Akhoundi, said on state television the order could be worth up to US$25bn (£18bn), about the same as a similar deal between Iran and Airbus announced in January.

Officials have warned the deal between Boeing and Iran Air could still take months to finalise because of negotiations over financing and the need for the US government to agree to it.
