Donald Trump in the UK

BTN was invited to the flying visit last Thursday, 23 June, of presumptive US presidential candidate Donald Trump at his refurbished Turnberry golf course and luxury hotel. We sent Northpoint Aviation’s Basil O’Fee down from Inverness.

Prestwick Airport, owned by Scotland, is 20 miles from Turnberry, but the other blond bombshell chose to arrive by Trump helicopter. For the Open in July at Royal Troon, just five miles away, up to 80 business jets are expected.

Unusually, “The Donald” was not meeting any UK politicians or dignitaries on this transatlantic trip, but had come solely to preside over the re-opening ceremony, and a subsequent visit to his other Scottish course in Aberdeen. The opening event was held outdoors on a spectacular course headland with an additionally refurbished lighthouse as backdrop. His formal speech was almost wholly concerned with the details of the impressive refurbishment.

It was only when proceedings were opened up to questions that political issues were raised. The event coincided with the unfolding morning news regarding Brexit and David Cameron. Trump said he thought Brexit was a good thing and that “basically, they took back their country". He added: "I think we're doing very well in the United States also, and it is essentially the same thing that is happening in the United States.”  www.glasgowprestwick.com www.turnberry.co.uk
