Shangri-La says it with flowers

Singapore’s Shangri-La Hotel has celebrated its 45th anniversary by opening a 7m (23ft) tall open-air orchid greenhouse sculpture in the heart of its 15-acre estate.

Known simply as “The Orchid”, and containing more than 600 examples, the installation is designed to showcase the plants as they change during the seasons. The orchid is Singapore’s national flower.

For the official opening collection, 33 varieties in six different colours – yellow, orange, pink, red, blue and white – were selected to cover The Orchid’s inner walls.

Special features for guests include a self-guided 30min Orchid Walk, sketching classes in the gardens and the Diner De Fleurs, a private dinner for two to six people inside The Orchid with a themed menu devised by the hotel’s master chefs.

Also available is a guided drone-flight session which shows an overhead perspective of the sculpture, with the footage sent to participants afterwards as a memento of their stay.

The story of the Shangri-La’s orchids is told on a dedicated website about the gardens with interactive content including a collection of virtual-reality photographs and a time-lapse video of the construction of The Orchid.
