Oman Air is Extreme!

Cardiff Bay was the venue last week for the UK round of the Oman Sail Extreme Sailing series of ‘stadium’ races at venues around the world. Previously, Muscat and Quingdao (China) had hosted this year’s series, which, after eight races, completes in Australia in December.

The event involves very fast (20 knots-plus) catamarans competing at inshore circuits around the globe.

Eight teams took part at the Cardiff event, including Oman Air, Red Bull and newcomer China One. One passenger per boat is allowed as ballast, with media and trade invited to get a friendly soaking.

For Oman Air, the timing could not be better with its second daily service from Heathrow to Muscat launched in April and Manchester coming on-stream next April.

Perhaps the only bad news for Welsh clients is that the Principality is outside the free 50-mile chauffeur service for all Business Class passengers. However, the airline is expected to announce shortly a tie-up with Great Western Rail (GWR) for air/train tickets.

UK country manager Simon Cook did not go for a ride himself but did take charge of the 'guest' boarding, riding around in a fast rib and overseeing proceedings.

The Cardiff series was won by Oman Air skippered by Morgan Larson.
