Etihad joins forces with Avianca

Days after Brazilian carrier Avianca was declared by its major shareholder not for sale, the airline has signed a codeshare partnership with Etihad of the UAE.

Avianca’s Germán Efromovich of the Synergy Group said talks that had been going on with other airlines were efforts to find links that would lead to faster growth.

Etihad announced the codeshare agreement almost immediately, describing the South American company as an important strategic partner for Etihad in the region.

Under the agreement, Etihad will put its EY code on domestic flights operated by Avianca Brasil, while Avianca Brasil will put its O6 code on Etihad flights between Abu Dhabi and São Paulo.

The deal offers Etihad passengers convenient connections to and from eight other Brazilian destinations including Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife, Salvador and Maceió.

Martin Drew, senior vice-president – Americas for Etihad, which recently signed a similar deal with Avianca Colombia, said his airline would be able to offer passengers connections especially to destinations in Africa, Asia and Oceania, where Avianca Brasil did not operate directly.

Etihad has flown between Abu Dhabi and São Paulo since June 2013 and has carried more than 340,000 passengers on the route.
