EgyptAir black boxes found

The two black boxes from EgyptAir Flight MS804 were being examined in Alexandria yesterday (Sunday) after being recovered from the crash site in the Mediterranean.

The search team confirmed on Friday that the flight data recorder had been found, a day after the cockpit voice recorder was brought to the surface.

Both pieces of equipment were damaged but investigators said the most vital parts were intact.

Searchers had to race against time to recover the recorders, which have a fixed life and were scheduled to stop sending signals next Friday, 24 June.

Egyptair MS804 went down in the eastern Mediterranean on 19 May during the last stages of a flight from Paris to Cairo, killing the 66 people on board.

Most of the remains of the aircraft were found on Tuesday. With the recorders now also being examined, there are hopes the cause of the accident may soon be known.

Once the crash site had been identified, images of the wreckage at a depth of about 3,000m (10,000ft) led to the next stage of recovery, mapping the scene in the attempt to pinpoint the recorders, which was ultimately successful.  www.egyptair.com
