Singapore Airlines update

Sheldon Hee is the new Singapore Airlines (SQ) general manager for the UK and Ireland. With the airline 17 years, he was previously vice-president marketing communications and development and replaces Wilson Yong, who has returned to the airline’s Singapore HQ.

Currently the airline serves Heathrow with two A380 flights daily and two Boeing 777-300 services. It also operates daily from Manchester to Singapore via Munich (as a successful fifth-freedom inter-European flight) with the Boeing twin. A Lufthansa joint-venture arrangement is in final negotiations, ensuring a non-stop service is not that far away.

Over many years, SQ has been seen as an innovative airline and was the lead operator for the A380. The carrier’s first A350 has been delivered and is expected to take over the three-times-weekly Düsseldorf route from 21 July. As more aircraft arrive, 20 September will see Singapore to Canberra, the Australian capital, and then on to Wellington, the New Zealand capital, but like Canberra not the largest city. The aircraft will include a Premium Economy Class, with 38in seat pitch, also being introduced across the fleet.

In a meeting at the airline’s futuristic UK HQ at Gunnersbury, not far from Heathrow, Sheldon Hee said that UK travellers were increasingly using Silk Air and Scoot, the airline’s budget short- and medium-haul subsidiaries, for regional flights.
