Delta launches EDI – JFK

Competition between airlines serving the Scottish market intensified on Friday with the launch by Delta Air Lines of year-round non-stop service between Edinburgh and New York-JFK.

Operating initially with a 163-seat Boeing 757-200ER, with a larger B767-300ER in summer, Delta claims it will offer more onward connections and on-board amenities than any other airline serving the route.

The new service extends Delta’s UK network into Scotland and gives passengers a choice of 60 onward connections throughout the US including top business destination such as Atlanta, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Frank Jahangir, Delta’s vice president sales for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “We are confident the route will expand trade opportunities, with VisitScotland estimating the new flight has the potential to bring an additional £23m into Scotland in one year alone.”

Edinburgh Airport chief executive Gordon Dewar added: “This is a great statement of confidence from Delta Air Lines both in this city and in Scotland.

“It is further confirmation of Edinburgh Airport’s position as the leader for connectivity from Scotland to the US.

“I congratulate Delta for recognising the growing international demand for direct links to Edinburgh. This move shows the airline has similar aspirations for growth as we do.”
