Having pulled out of Pittsburgh (PIT) in 1999, British Airways could be making a comeback in spring 2017 to what was once the steel capital of the world.
A senior delegation has been visiting London to promote the only one of the Big Five US cities currently without non-stop service from the UK.
The Boeing 787, BA’s latest fleet addition, is considered ideal for the route and Pittsburgh’s international airport is a hub for BA’s oneworld partner American Airlines.
Pittsburgh has had a remarkable renaissance since the closure of the steel plants in the 1980s and was chosen for the G20 Summit in 2009, partly to be able to showcase to other American cities, and cities the world over, that a return is possible. It will shortly host the US Open golf tournament.
The city stands at the intersection of three major rivers, is surrounded by green hills and has earned a reputation as one of America’s most liveable cities as well as one of the safest.
Pittsburgh’s economy has moved on from the production of steel, iron and glass and is now driven by technology, medicine, finance and tourism. Downtown restaurants, theatres and shops are easily accessed on foot or on the “T,” the free-to-use underground rail system.
