Gatwick – Las Vegas date set

Norwegian Air Shuttle plans to start a twice-a-week service between Gatwick and Las Vegas on 31 October using a 291-seat B787 Dreamliner.

The airline already offers non-stop flights between Las Vegas and Copenhagen and Stockholm and is planning a new service to Oslo in November.

The plans will open up new transatlantic competition, with Las Vegas served by Virgin Atlantic from Gatwick and British Airways from Heathrow.

Norwegian’s latest expansion is putting the spotlight back on a dispute in the US about its staffing policies.

The airline earlier this month launched three-a-week Gatwick – San Francisco flights, but its Irish-based subsidiary, Norwegian Air International, is still awaiting clearance to operate separate transatlantic services.

The US Department of Transportation has approved the airline’s plans but unions and some politicians in the US are objecting to what they say is proposed use of outsourced workers, which pilot representatives say will ultimately drive down wages and cost jobs.
