Diamond days at Manchester

Lufthansa has been celebrating 60 years of flights from Manchester reaching new heights with passenger figures for the first four months of 2016 showing 4% growth compared with the same period last year.

The figures were released by the airline’s group regional director for the UK & Ireland Christian Schindler when he visited Manchester to join in the diamond anniversary celebrations.

He said: “This continued growth confirms the hub airlines in the Lufthansa Group – Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines – continue to be among the leading carriers at Manchester.

“We are on target to hit the million-passengers-a-year mark at Manchester for 2016, proving once again most air travellers value the long-standing commitment our group has to our passengers in the North West.”

Schindler said passengers “cherish the option” of being able to start their journeys directly at Manchester, avoiding the longer transfers to London area airports.

Manchester Airport commercial director Stephen Turner said the anniversary was a “fantastic achievement”.

He praised the Lufthansa Group for continuing to offer the 22m people in the Manchester catchment area direct flights to key European cities and also “great onward connectivity”.

Passengers departing from Manchester during the anniversary celebrations were entertained by a German oompah band, cupcakes and sparkling wine.
