Air India resumes LHR – NYC

Business travellers will have a new transatlantic option from August when Air India plans to restore a fifth-freedom service between London and New York.

The start of the three-a-week service is set for 15 August using a two-class B787 with 18 Business Class seats and 238 in Economy.

Unlike the previous operation, when flights were routed Delhi – London – New York JFK, the new ones will operate Ahmedabad – London – New York Newark.

Air India is cutting its Delhi – London service from three flights a day to two to make a Heathrow slot available for the Newark run, with reports suggesting it will add a separate Ahmedabad – London terminating flight later.

Flight AI171 will depart Heathrow at 12:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, arriving at Newark at 15:00.

The return AI172 will depart Newark at 00:20 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, arriving at Heathrow at 12:05.

A number of fifth-freedom carriers operated London – New York services for a while but have now stopped. Kuwait Airways was the last to drop the flights, in December.
