Virgin Trains' new looks

Virgin Trains will be celebrating today (Monday) with the official opening of its refurbished First Class lounge at King’s Cross in London, the latest of eight lounges on the east coast network where Virgin has undertaken a major overhaul following 6% growth in First Class travel on the route.

The refreshed designs include new meeting points, workdesks, free wi-fi and power points.

The latest improvements come after the company embarked on a £21m refurbishment of its trains.

It also unveiled last month the first of its new fleet, the 125mph Virgin Azuma, which it says will be one of the most advanced on the UK’s rail network

The company plans 65 Azumas on the route, giving an extra 12,200 seats and increasing peak capacity into King’s Cross by 28%.

In another development, delayed Virgin Trains passengers can now receive compensation by cheque rather than rail vouchers.

The operator says it is the first in the UK to offer passengers across both east and west coast routes who are delayed for more than 30min, redress in this form as the default option. Customers can still opt for vouchers if they prefer.  www.virgintrains.co.uk
