Portugal national carrier TAP is to be the lead customer for the A330neo, the latest version of Airbus’ current generation of wide-body jets.
Fitted with Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the aircraft is an updated version of the A330 which Airbus says offers airlines greater fuel efficiency. It is due to enter service late next year.
TAP has ordered 14 of the aircraft as part of a wider fleet update it announced last year.
The Portuguese airline will also be the first to have a new cabin layout called ‘Airspace,’ which was showcased at an industry event in Hamburg last week. Airbus says the design allows airlines to add more seats according to demand.
Airbus launched the A330neo, which can seat 250-300 passengers, in 2014. The move was widely seen as a way partly to plug a gap after sales of the smallest version of the newer Airbus A350 series were said to be disappointing. www.flytap.com
