Woolwich Crossrail – but not London City

Transport for London (TfL) and the Department for Transport (DfT), sponsors of Crossrail, have confirmed that Crossrail services will call at Woolwich.  There is still no word on suggestions that a station be constructed on the old Silvertown for London City Airport (LCY) site less than 200m from the airport entrance.  As things stand, Crossrail trains will stop at Excel with passengers then changing to the 473 bus service (every 10 minutes) to the airport.  The railway runs under the end of the runway.

In a press release TfL has indicated that the train time from Heathrow to a London City station would be around 45 minutes, Tottenham Court Road 15 minutes and Canary Wharf five minutes, which is not directly connected to the airport.  Whilst the DLR provides an excellent service to LCY and carries about half of the current three million passengers, it is limited with its connections via Bank, Canning Town, Stratford and Tower Hill and is a stopping service.

The Woolwich interchange has been partially funded by a developer and the local Borough.  It is expected to open in 2018.  Suggestions are that Silvertown could be financed in much the same way with the airport contributing. www.crossrail.co.uk/news
