The European Commission has cleared Delta Air Lines to buy a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic, the European Union's competition watchdog said on Thursday.
The Commission said that it was not concerned about the transaction because the companies would continue to face competition, especially from British Airways and American Airlines.
Delta announced the purchase in December, saying that the move would allow the US carrier to expand its access to London's Heathrow Airport.
The airlines have still to confirm detailed plans but it could include the American carrier relocating to the central T3, where qualifying passengers will be able to use Virgin’s award winning Clubhouse lounge. The public transport connections are much superior too. www.delta.com www.virgin-atlantic.com
