Best airport food

A research team has come up with a list of what they consider the finest airport food.  Whether their research would pass muster with some of the fine dining experts in national newspapers is questionable and open to criticism by regular travellers.

For our part we were recently invited to take lunch at the rooftop restaurant in the new Holiday Inn at London – Southend Airport.  Not only was the food excellent but the ambience ideal for air travellers with a splendid view of the new terminal and adjacent railway station.

According to the team from Thedailymeal.com, from an initial list of 100 contenders, they came up with a shortlist of 31 and judged Barcelona El Prat Airport's Porta Gaig, in Terminal 1, the best of all.  Here, chef Charles Gaig's traditional Spanish food is served.

US airport restaurants dominated the top 10.  They included the second-placed Salt Lick BBQ at Austin-Bergstrom Airport, Texas and Tortas Frontera, at Chicago O'Hare, which came in third.

In contrast, just one Asian airport restaurant made it into the top 20 while the highest-placed UK airport restaurant was Heathrow's Plane Food, in 13th.
