De Havilland news

One of the oldest names in aviation still building aircraft, de Havilland (albeit the Canadian version) has announced plans to establish a brand-new assembly and support operation in Western Canada.

The new facility’s home will be in Wheatland County, Alberta, approximately 30 minutes east of Calgary, and will consist of a new, state-of-the-art aircraft assembly facility, runway, parts manufacturing and distribution centre and a maintenance repair and overhaul unit. In addition, educational space for training the workforce of the future is planned as well as general office buildings and a de Havilland Canada aircraft museum.

Current plans call for the operation to be the site for final assembly for the DHC-515 Firefighter aircraft, which was launched earlier this year, the DHC-6 Twin Otter, moving from nearby Calgary, and the Dash 8-400 aircraft currently produced in Toronto.

The de Havilland Aircraft Company was established at Stag Lane Aerodrome, Edgware, North London, in 1920 by Geoffrey de Havilland.  Boeing dates from 1917.
