BALPA boss

Following Brian Strutton’s stepping down as General Secretary of BALPA back at the end of July the pilots union has announced his permanent replacement.

Captain Martin Chalk, a former British Airways pilot, takes over the permanent leadership role at the union after a three-month stint as the Acting General Secretary.  BALPA members elect the General Secretary.

He brings to the role, not only his many years as a pilot, but also experience in leadership roles at other international aviation bodies including the European Cockpit Association (ECA) and The International Federation of Air Line Pilots’ Associations (IFALPA).

Chalk thanked BALPA members for showing their trust in him and pledged to work hard to serve members, raise the profile of BALPA and ensure the voice of pilots is heard:

“I am proud to be a professional pilot – the most successful profession, if the measure of success is the number of times we achieve our primary goal of a safe flight.

“The members, representatives and staff of BALPA still combine to ensure every flight is a safe flight; they unite to ensure every professional pilot works under an agreement which is fair and rewards the education, skill and experience required and they together represent the very best of our profession to the world.”

“I am humbled to be asked to join them and I pledge to work as hard as I can, not just to ensure every professional who can be a member, is a member; but is as proud to be a member as I am.”
