Ireland's capital on a roll

Last week’s announcement by Scandinavian Airlines of more flights from Dublin Airport (see this issue) is the fifth expansion for the Irish airport announced by an overseas airline in the past three weeks, according to the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

The Air France KLM low-cost offshoot Transavia is to operate a new Dublin – Munich service next summer, while KLM itself has said it is to double its proposed Amsterdam flights.

Delta Air Lines is planning a new service to Boston in addition to its New York and Atlanta routes, while Etihad resumes its year-round double-daily service to Abu Dhabi from next April. A shortage of suitable aircraft had prompted it to cut back to once a day.

It is all adding up to a bumper period for Dublin, which reported nearly 2.6m passengers passed through it in September, an 11% rise on the same month last year and marking the busiest September in the its 76-year history.

More than 21.4m people travelled through Dublin Airport in the first nine months of the year, 12% more than in the same period in 2015, which the airport authority says indicates it is likely to exceed the record set last year, when passenger numbers hit 25m.
