FAA bans Galaxy phones

The saga of Samsung’s troubled Galaxy Note 7 device took a dramatic new turn on Friday when the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Aviation Administration (FDA) issued an emergency order banning it from air transportation in the US.

The order, which came into force on Saturday, said individuals owning or possessing Samsung Galaxy Note7, some of which have burst into flames, “may not transport the device on their person, in carry-on baggage, or in checked baggage on flights to, from, or within the United States”. The agencies said the phones also could not be shipped as air cargo.

The statement marked a major escalation in concern by the FAA, which a week previously issued a warning about the Note 7 but stopped short of banning the device altogether.

On that occasion, it urged passengers on aircraft “to power down, and not use, charge, or stow in checked baggage, all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices, including recalled and replacement devices”.

The agency said that advice was in response to a 10 October statement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission following a decision by Samsung to suspend global sales of all Galaxy Note 7 devices.

Although the FAA governs only US airspace, airlines worldwide are now expected to implement the ban.
