Back to Beijing for Qantas

The business-travel market will be a “key factor” when Qantas begins daily flights between Sydney and Beijing from 25 January, according to group chief executive Alan Joyce.

He said the launch was “the next step in the group’s strategy to tap into the exceptional growth of the Australia – China travel market”. Joyce added: “Business travel is a key focus for this route, particularly off the back of the free trade agreement with China, which is increasing the amount of freight we’re carrying.”

Qantas says the new route represents an 18% growth in the airline’s total capacity into Greater China and a 7% rise in its total capacity into Asia. The company has 28 return services a week to Hong Kong and a daily return to Shanghai.

Marking Qantas’ return to the route for the first time since 2009, the Sydney – Beijing service will use an Airbus A330-200, with return flights timed to connect with Qantas’ extensive domestic and trans-Tasman network.

The new service is part of an expansion of Qantas’ joint-venture partnership with China Eastern which will also see three international codeshare routes between Australia and China being added: Sydney – Hangzhou, Sydney – Kunming and Brisbane – Shanghai.
